How long have you been helping entrepreneurs and how did you become a Mindset Mastery mentor?
The best way to answer this is to share with you my “heroic moment” and the resulting “compelling story” that made me what I am today and help others to close more deals.
The heroic moment in my life happened in late 2004. I had quit my corporate job and had started doing real estate in Santa Fe and taking programs, doing workshops to help me network, find clients and close deals. I found myself nearly broke and living in a mobile home with my wife and two kids. My son and daughter were sleeping on the living room floor as my wife and I had a bedroom and the other was our office.
One day my daughter Gabriella brings a friend over from school. I’m in the office working when I hear the friend ask Gabby “Let’s go to your room to play.” My daughter says she has no bedroom. I look up to see the friend ask my daughter where she sleeps and plays. Gabby pointed the floor. I felt nauseous. That night I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t get the image out of my head – my little girl playing and sleeping on the floor, her friend’s puzzled look. I had two options – close shop and get a job, or really find out what I had to do to become successful.
The choice for me was easy – I wouldn’t get a job because that would mean my children would see me give up. I thought, “I’ve taken the courses, read the books… What am I doing wrong?”
I had learned numerous closing systems went to workshops and seminars and learned some really amazing things. I knew “what to do”, but I still had to learn “how to do” those things persuasively. I needed to change my mindset, to find out what was really holding me back on a personal level. I had the mental knowledge to sell and close, but my personal beliefs were causing my body to project a lack of confidence in what I had to offer. I knew there was a problem with me, the way I looked at things.
So, on that lonely night, I made a commitment to do whatever was necessary to use the knowledge I had learned and make it work for me, be an extension of me. I got a personal coach and took more courses all with the idea of bettering my mindset, not just the business. Within a month of internalizing these systems I closed my first deal, which would allow me to retire right now if I wanted, and still send my children to college, fully paid.
Then something amazing happened. Associates and colleagues that had trouble closing like I did were calling and saying things like “Doug, how is it you’re living in a trailer one day, and then owning the entire trailer park and set for life the next? How in the world did you close a deal like that?” I would ask them about their closing systems, scripts and techniques and they would reveal that they were using the same methods as me. I started to notice that their words were right, but their presentation, there voice and posture, their self-image was completely contradictory to what they were saying. They were giving their clients two different messages – just like I was.
I like seeing other people succeed, knowing I was a part of it. I would give my friends pointers and tips on how to close. Wouldn’t you believe it, they all came back with “Doug, I closed it!” So they kept coming, I kept giving advice, all the time honing my own closing skills teaching my friends what I had learned in networking, marketing, closing techniques etc. But in talking with my colleagues (some of whom are still students and clients) I realized that something was stopping the millions of entrepreneurs out there from absorbing and truly owing the information the had acquired and using it to their advantage. I realized that one’s mindset needed to change, needed to be wired toward success or all the books, courses and techniques that really do work, were just falling on deaf ears.
Since then, I’ve worked with hundreds of private clients, spoken in front of numerous groups, and created the Mindset Mastery System; a series of 4 simple but important success-building steps every entrepreneur needs to utilize to get more prospects and close more deals faster than ever.
Who are your clients?
My clients are entrepreneurs just like yourself in various industries either starting up or who have been in business for a while and want to amp up their success, or have hit a ceiling and need a way to move forward with their business. I teach them how to remove the barriers that prevent them from achieving success and close deals with ease. I also specialize in helping the returning men and women of the armed forces to re-integrate into civilian life by giving them the tools to start their own businesses by transferring their military training into the business world.

Is there anyone for whom this system won’t work?
I’m highly selective when it comes to accepting new clients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited for the system and wouldn’t get the results they were expecting. That would just be unfair to them.Mindset Mastery programs are NOT for those who don’t have an income and are completely, financially desperate, at least not right now. I’ve noticed that people in financial crisis don’t trust the recommendations I give them and do not complete the work. I can’t blame them – it’s very difficult when you have to worry how you will pay rent or the mortgage this month and also concentrate on making more money.If you’re in this category, it’s absolutely OK. As you know, I’ve been there and I can guarantee, so have most of the people out there. Do yourself 3 favors:
Get some income with a full-time or part-time job at the very least, and then call me. This will de-clutter your mind enough to focus on your Mindset Mastery assignments and your vision. Once prospects come in and you start closing, reduce your hours at your other job so you can focus on your business.
